Letters from at Home
or: Je näher man ein Wort ansieht desto ferner schaut es zurück    1999

On the occasion of my journey to Mexico I asked friends to send me statements on the question " Where are you at home?". These letters were divided into individual terms, which were arranged alphabetically and translated into the official national language (Spanish). Out of this "a homeland dictionary" was developed. During my stay I was searching for images which I then associated - filtered by my strange/European/ touristic eyes - with single words of the dictionary. Across a map of Germany there is painted the outline of Mexico. The archives of all words used in the letters are situated within two index card boxes. Step by step there grows a collage-like new map atop of this arrangement.
